I survived a severe accident years ago. Since then, the pain in my neck and shoulder has never truly gone away. At first, it was sharp. Later, it became something harder to explain — a dull, persistent, dragging ache that lives inside the nerves. A chronic pain that no medicine could touch.
I saw many doctors, across different hospitals, from Europe to Asia. I tried everything from strong painkillers to physical therapy. Nothing worked. Some doctors even said there was nothing wrong with my neck. One private clinic charged me nearly €1000 just to run an MRI and send me home with vague advice: “You should do some physiotherapy.” That was it.
I gave physiotherapy a try. The first session, they just asked questions and entered my personal data into their system — no treatment at all. I paid over €50 for that. The second time, I asked for acupuncture since it was on their service list. They had to call another staff member who barely knew what to do. She inserted a few needles into my neck but didn’t even dare to turn on the electric stimulation. “Let’s take it slow,” she said. The third session was the same. They made me rotate my neck and concluded it was “misaligned” — but again, no real solution. After €6000 spent across consultations and visits, I still had the same pain.
I became angry. Not just at the pain, but at the system. Public doctors in Finland gave me nothing but painkillers. Private doctors took my money and did nothing better. I decided to take healing into my own hands.
With a background in science and tech, I started reading about medical technologies and alternative therapies. That’s when I discovered the use of high-level infrared light (not the kind used for heating chickens — I mean therapeutic infrared in the far-infrared or near-infrared range). It sounded risky but promising. I took a chance and bought one.
It changed my life.
I placed the infrared lamp about 20 cm away from my body and let it shine for 20–30 minutes per session, every day. I targeted the areas of chronic tension — neck, shoulder, and upper back. After a few days, I felt something shift. My muscles relaxed. The pain started to recede. Slowly, gradually, I could move better, sleep better, and function without drowning in that invisible agony.
Of course, infrared light comes with one serious warning: Never expose your eyes to it. Infrared radiation can be dangerous to the eyes even if you don’t feel anything. So here’s what I do:
- I prepare the position of the lamp before turning it on.
- I cover my eyes with a thick towel or shirt.
- I make sure the room is dark so I don’t see the red glow even indirectly.
- If I need to open my eyes, I always turn off the lamp first.
Don’t trust the cheap infrared goggles you see online. Just cover your eyes properly, or keep them closed and shielded. That’s the only way to be safe.
I’ve used this method for nearly 20 years. Whether I come home tired from work, sore from physical activity, or simply overwhelmed by tension — I rely on infrared light. It has become part of my healing ritual.
This is not a cure for everyone. Chronic pain is complex. But if you’ve tried everything — if no one believes your pain, and even professionals fail you — I hope this gives you one more option to explore.
Sometimes, healing doesn’t come from big hospitals or expensive treatments. It comes from understanding your body and not giving up.
This is for those who live with invisible pain, and still keep going.
